Wired Kingdom is an exhibit and showcase of locally made, digital and electronic art at the Arts Center of the Capital Region, in Troy, NY.
The Arts Center of the Capital Region is accepting proposals for an upcoming onsite exhibit and showcase of digital and electronic art. The exhibit will run September 17th – 29th culminating with an opening , and live performance showcase on September 28th as part of Troy Night Out. Artists currently living in the Capital Region and working in electronic and digital media are welcome to submit proposals for the two week gallery show, and/or short performances to be presented/screened/played on the evening of the 28th. Works which feature some interactive component are highly encouraged.

-I was invited to do a live performance this Saturday, January 7, at 6 pm, on what appears to be a new, and very interesting Internet radio station, IOUFM. I’ll be playing a version of 827, a modular piece that relies on audio cells of either acoustic guitar or shortwave signals, which are freely combined, repeated and manipulated during a performance.
-Cyclene Records has just released a six-track album, Evening In Paris. It features guitar loops, Mellotron, mood music, and field recordings, in an atmosphere of decrepit nostalgia and corroded beauty. It’s a free download, so go get it.

-I have a soundscape scheduled to be played during the Alchemy Film Festival, taking place in Hawick, Scotland, this weekend (October 21-3). The piece is called psedacris mist and is a composite of chorus frogs, crickets, and a wind chime, all recorded in New York, plus the sounds of a paddle boat in Guangzhou, China, and birds at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

-I’ll be back at the Arts Center in Troy again this month, on Friday night, 9/30, during Troy Night Out, for another performance of John Cage’s Imaginary Landscape #4, as part of the Center’s Wired Kingdom exhibit of locally made digital art. I’ll also be performing solo, with a new piece called Ni Hao Are You?, which combines sounds from my library of field recordings made in China with recordings I’ll be making in downtown Troy the day of the performance.
-This Saturday, 9/9, I’ll be participating in a performance of Imaginary Landscape No. 4, conducted by Holland Hopson, at the Arts Center in Troy, in celebration of John Cage‘s 99th birthday.

-“The Nail House of Yang Wu” is a group of pieces based on some humble home recordings I’ve been working on for a number of years now. It has finally come to light and found a home on Stasisfield, the granddaddy of experimental net labels, and I’m quite honored to have my work on this label. John Kannenberg, the curator, is both a sound and visual artist, and he creates a digital booklet for each release. He did an amazing job for my e.p., it looks incredible.

-Really looking forward to playing the Nebraska Pop Festival in Omaha next month. Here is info on the schedule, and an interview with Christopher from Series Two Records, who organized the festival. Bands are coming from the Midwest, or course, and both coasts, but also from Ireland, Sweden and New Zealand, which gives it an international scope. -John Kannenberg, curator of stasisfield, had an amusing incident with a hydrophone in Egypt. What was thought to be a disaster, unexpectedly revealed qualities that were inherently beautiful despite itself. John invited remixes of the original, and my own, “After Karanis,” has been posted on the second collection of remixes, Wave 2, for the project he calls Mer-Wer.

-“Velocipedic Epidemic,” a 60 second piece included in this past June’s 60×60 mix at the International Computer Music Conference, will get a second hearing some time in 2011 in New York City. 60×60 concerts are one-hour-long shows curated by Robert Voisey, which are made by sequencing 60 pre-recorded pieces by 60 different composers, each piece a minute in length or shorter. Highlighting the work of a great many composers, 60×60 testifies to the vibrancy of contemporary composition by present a diverse array of styles, aesthetics, and techniques being used today (http://www.voxnovus.com/60×60).

-Jon Nelson, of Some Assembly Required, has just released a fantastic compilation CD of 50 tracks, each of which use at least 50% recycled audio (sounds found in the broadcast media). Each track is 50 seconds, hence the title of the collection 50/50, available to order here. I’m happy to say, my track is #30, “Lifetime Pop Head,” which mashes up samples from Kylie’s, “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head,” along with “Once in a Lifetime,” by Talking Heads, and the complete audio of an EZPop popcorn TV commercial from some time in the 1950’s. I think my piece rocks, but the whole comp is hilarious, very creative, and well worth your attention.

-I’m fully immersed in my new project, Evening In Paris. Being me, things aren’t quite what they seem. The title refers not to the locale, but to the scent created in the 1930’s, which remained popular through the 1950’s. I thought this would be a long term project, but I am already working on 10 tracks simultaneously, trying to put them into a cohesive collection. It’s all about beauty, nostalgia, memory, mood, and the 1950’s; the usual stuff. Most of the tracks are titled after vintage perfumes. I’m attempting to capture that overwhelming flood of associations one experiences when catching the aroma of a scent not detected in decades. It’s very Proustian. None of this may be evident at all in the listening experience, but that’s the background behind the inspiration.

-The Caramel Snow project has been wrapped up and put on hold for now. I spent the last 8 months writing and recording 11 pop/rock tunes based on Spam email lyrics, and it’s been fun, and I’ve learned a few things from trying to write songs. It’s time to make room in my brain for the next project.

-Announcing two new releases available for free download:
The first is my new album, The Palace of Gathered Elegance, released this month on Cyclene Records, which is nine tracks of processed and looped field recordings made in August of 2009 in China, layered with electric guitar. The other is Quatrefoil, my laptop/guitar electronica/post-rock project from 2009, available from the Happy New Year Recordings page on Bandcamp.
-“Smile World,” the first track from my aforementioned new album, The Palace of Gathered Elegance, was included this month in the Sound Stations listening structures, positioned around St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral in Cork, Ireland, during the fifth Sonic Vigil, curated by The Quiet Club and Gruenrekorder.
-July 18 is World Listening Day. Peter O’Doherty will be playing my Shamian Island Soundwalk on his Rhizoradio show, which netcasts on DFM radio in the Netherlands live every Sunday at 18:00 (CET).
-2 new tracks, Techen Taiwan, and A Normal Life have been added to my Spam song collection on the Caramel Snow page.

-I’ll be performing tonight at Mildred’s Lane, in Beach Lake, PA. Thanks to Adam Menzies for the invitation.
-My set at this year’s ICMC is available to stream or download for free here. The University Cafe at Stony Brook had no air conditioning, and they had a huge industrial fan blowing on us, so some details may have been lost on the audience, but the recording was done directly from my mixer, so the sound is crystal clear. It was a great experience playing there, although getting to Long Island from Albany was an ordeal. Enjoyed some camaraderie with the composer Joshua Fried, who was as engaging as a performer as he was as an all-around cool guy.

-Next week, on June 3, I’ll be performing at the International Computer Music Conference, Stony Brook University. I’ll be doing a set for laptop and electric guitar. I also have a piece programmed on the 60X60 program, curated by Robert Voisey of Vox Novus. There will be six diffusions of 60 different 60-second pieces (360 total). This is how Voisey describes this special mix: 360 degrees of 60×60 was created for the 2010 ICMC RED Edition (International Computer Music Conference). 360 one minute pieces were selected to create 6 one hour mixes. The 6 different mixes are all named a different shade of red to honor the RED edition of ICMC: Burgundy mix, Crimson mix, Magenta mix, Sanguine mix, Scarlet mix, and Vermilion mix.

-This year’s new project is tentatively being called Caramel Snow. It’s a Pop/Rock project that will function as a break and temporary diversion from my soundart/phonography work.
I’ve never been a songwriter in the conventional sense of the term, but I’m finally in the mood to give it a whirl. Usable lyrics have always evaded me, so I’ve decided to set Spam email to music. Spam email is by now a cultural universal that anyone online can relate to. Plus it’s so well written. Musically, I’m going to pay homage to, emulate, and parody, my favorite British shoegaze bands of the late 80’s early 90’s, such as Cocteau Twins, Lush, My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive, as well as the contemporary Swedish variety of the genre, like The Radio Dept., and The Bridal Shop. I’m ambitiously aiming for a set of 6 songs. If it all turns out well, I will probably move on, and set Remembrance of Things Past to Power Pop. (I’m half serious.)

I played some favorite tunes of mine from Annie, Puffy, Roisin Murphy, Action Biker, Gudrun Gut, Saint Etienne, and Kylie, among others. I even snuck in one of my own tracks from AMUSANT!.

-My field recording of a spring evening (midnight, actually) is running on jourparjour.net, for the Radio Village Nomade project, sponsored by Laboratoire Village Nomade, located in La Corbiere, Switzerland. -My new cd, AMUSANT! is finished but not yet available, unless you are in Stockholm, Sweden, for the next few weeks. It is getting its debut at an exhibit of sound art at the Ersta Konsthall, called “Art Is Not Mute.” The work of international sound artists is available to listen to at the exhibit, and the physical cds are on display. On opening night a number of DJs, including Andreas Bertling, were invited to use the exhibited works as the source of an evening’s performance.

-Finally, I started a blog, WHITE CHOCOLATE BUNNY EARS, at blogspot.com. I’ll be reviewing live and recorded music that has some significance for me. I started with my first rock concert, The Doors in 1968, and fast forwarded to the present, Electrelane this month. Now I’m going to fill in the 39 years in between. Wish me luck, and a good memory.

The composition, which he titled, R(H)umeur collective – part. 1, was broadcast on March 9 on Radio Grenouille, in Marseille, and featured the work of over 25 composers in one continuous piece.

-My composition, SAM’S CLUB, has been included in the compilation cd, “Bend It Like Beckett,” curated by Danny McCarthy for Sound Works in Cork, Ireland, to commemorate the 100th birthday of Samuel Beckett. –My one-minute radio piece, GRAVITY PROBLEM NO. 3, was selected by Time Labs for inclusion with 40 others and broadcast in a program simultaneously across 9 European countries on the 15th of Sept.
– My recording of a cloisonne factory in Beijing was played on a program called Ghost In The Machine during the Giant Ear))) show on free103point9 Online Radio.

– I will be appearing with the New York Phonographers Union at the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn, on Wed., September 13.
– I will be appearing at the Perfect Blend cafe, Delmar, NY, on Sun., Sept. 24 from 2-4 pm.

– I will be performing as guitarist with the Jim Sande Ensemble at the Muddy Cup (on Madison Avenue in Albany, NY, next to the Madison Theater) on Sunday, July 16, at 4pm.
– The German Web site de:bug has reviewed AUTUMN RAIN IN THE YARD, I suspect somewhat unfavorably. If anyone can translate German, please let me know.
– My composition, ENVELOPE OF LEVELS, was accepted for the »Short Cuts: Beauty« electroacoustic competition sponsored by the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany, for the World New Music Festival taking place in Stuttgart, Germany, from July 14 till 30.

– AUTUMN RAIN IN THE YARD received a nice review in Paris Transatlantic Magazine, and has also gotten airplay on Jacques Soddell’s Possible Musics show in Bendigo, Australia.
